Chapter 14

“A blow-up mattress?”

I stare at her. “Do you want to sleep on the floor?” I ask.

“Well, of course not. I guess this is the best option. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” I’m bummed about an air mattress too. I’m not exactly a small guy.

Sadie unpacks the snacks onto the makeshift kitchen counter as I carry in a case of water.

“No alcohol this time?” She asks.

I lift the water higher in the air to reveal the case of Bud.

I shrug. “Sweet tea gives me a sugar rush. I might as well catch a buzz.”

She laughs at my attempt at a joke, and I pull out the tiny pop-up chair.

“So, how’s your friend doing?”

“He’s hurt pretty bad. There’s no way to get an assessment.”

“He’ll heal.” I crack open a can and give it to her before I open one for myself. “You hungry?”

She wrinkles her nose. “Not really.”

“You haven’t eaten anything.” He pulls out a hot plate from under the handmade shelf. “Landon told me about this. You need something warm in your belly.” I stir some butter and garlic together and then slather it onto a tortilla before I slap it onto the griddle.

“That actually smells pretty good.”

“And I want you to eat it.” I add an array of cheese, top it with a second buttered tortilla, and start slicing up fresh avocados. “You like tomatoes and sour cream?”

“Yeah,” she nods. “Did you get some hot sauce?”

“Only the best.” He plants a giant container of Albert’s medium salsa on the table. “Just let me make you the best cheese quesadilla you’ve ever had. Drink up.”

“You drink up.”

“I’m drinking slowly.”

Sadie guzzles from the frosty bottle, and I try to push the thought of the sweetness of her lips from my mind.

“Are you going to tell me about him?”

“There’s nothing to really tell. He’s part of my pack. We’re close.”

I throw my head back and chuckle. “Don’t give me that shit. There are days when you wouldn’t wipe your ass with Trapper.”

She twists her mouth to one side. “Yeah, good point.” She rubs at the back of her neck.

I flip the quesadilla and let it cook while I prep a second one.

“We’re just really good friends, Beaux.”

“I saw you. When you saw him laying in that bed. You were scared. Your face said it all. You’re connected to him.”

“Not like you think.”

“Then what is it like?” I don’t understand. Were we just a quick fuck? Do you belong to someone else?”

“I don’t belong to Carver. Or anyone else for that matter.”

“But you are connected?”

“Yes.”

“Help me understand.”

It crushed my soul to see her cave when we entered that bedroom. The blood drained from her beautiful, ashen face. She stumbled and was forced to brace herself against the glossy, wooden bedpost. She couldn’t even bring herself to turn away from him and talk to me. It’s like she was in a trance, glued to his side.

I tracked her heartbeat, and it pounded wildly, ravaging her ribcage from the inside.

Now, she tries to act as if he’s just any other pack member, but I see differently.
